Sharelynn Moore, Itron SVP of Networked Solutions, shows how the Itron OpenWay and Silver Spring GEN5 networks will combine into a Smart Cities platform.
The WI-SUN Alliance was discussed as a new standard for wide-area networks; a sort of outdoor long-range IoT based on IEEE802.15.4g.
Solar-Powered Pole Sensor
John Lampe shows a new solar-powered pole sensor from Itron, which uses the Itron Gen5 network to alert crews when a pole is damaged.
Grid Advisor Line Sensor
Dan Smock from Eaton demonstrates the Grid Advisor line sensor that mounts with a hot stick and monitors line health via a cellular link but also a Bluetooth transceiver so a line crew can use a mobile app to read the data and program it. Yet another example of T&D field apps on the rise.
Transformer Control Technology
Wassim Akhdar from Varentec discusses transformer control technology, or Grid Edge Volt-VAR control, to be more precise. This controller operates via an Itron network to allow a utility to deal with PV generation and peak demand situations that are becoming increasingly problematic for the grid.
Network Control Center
I’m always up for a network control center demo and here Tim Bognar shows Itron’s OpenWay collection engine and control software in action right down to individual meters to see if they have been damaged, bypassed, or aren’t connecting reliably.
