Utility Partners of America has received authorization to proceed with the full-scale deployment of an electric and water smart meter installation for customers of Glendale Water and Power (GWP). UPA successfully completed the installation of network devices during the first phase of the initiative, which was completed on schedule.

The main deployment phase of the project commenced on Dec. 6, 2010, and is scheduled to be completed in September 2011. “The project is proceeding according to plan,” indicated Mike Cale, UPA's Chief Executive Officer. “UPA looks forward to providing a high degree of customer service and communication throughout the deployment in support of GWP’s efforts.”

UPA will install Itron, Inc.’s OpenWay Smart Grid technology for GWP’s 84,500 electric customers and Itron’s Water SaveSource for 33,400 water customers. In addition, UPA will install leak-detecting sensors, also from Itron, that will be used to continuously monitor GWP’s entire water system.

Recently, the GWP project was recognized with a Deployment Award from GridWeek2010, reflecting the city’s visionary and comprehensive smart grid implementation. When completed, more than 115,000 electric and water consumers will tap into advanced metering technology across a two-way communication network.
