Terna has completed its interventions for the new high-voltage and extra-high-voltage grid for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.

The projects will increase energy reliability in the locations where the Olympics will be held between February and March 2026.

The company has planned investments of $346.08 million to build infrastructure with the aim of strengthening the meshing of the electricity grid across a vast area of northern Italy, and to increase resilience in areas affected by extreme weather events in recent years. The new work in Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige, and Veneto includes 130 km of completely invisible power lines and involved over 150 businesses and more than 450 technicians as well as operating personnel.

Terna relied on Brugg Cables, a company in the Terna Energy Solutions Group, specializing in the design and construction of underground infrastructure, as its main supplier of terrestrial cables. The use of in-house procurement helped reduce time for procedures and time frames, allowing the works to be completed on schedule.

Around 60 km of new cables in total have been installed in Lombardy, and 3 km of existing overhead lines removed, with interventions in the metropolitan area of Milan and the Province of Sondrio. In the capital of the Lombardy region, Terna has completed power lines for the connection of the San Cristoforo and Rogoredo Primary Cabins.

In Valtellina, the Livigno-Premadio power line has entered operation. It consists of two underground cable power lines, each around 20 km in length, between the Primary Cabin in Livigno and Terna’s new Electrical Substation located in Premadio, in the municipality of Valdidentro. Built using compact gas-insulated technology, the station has a minimal footprint and is in harmony with the surrounding mountain landscape. The project is important for the area in question, as it has enabled connection to the national electricity grid for areas, where high voltage was not able to reach.

In the Autonomous Province of Trento, an underground cable connection of about 17 km is operative, connecting the Campitello Primary Cabin with the national high-voltage electricity grid using a Compact Rapid-Installation Station. This solution has been adopted at Terna’s new Electrical Substation in Moena, which was also designed using compact gas-insulated technology architecturally in keeping with the surrounding landscape of Val di Fassa.

In the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, the approximately 23 km underground cable power line between Laion and Corvara is in operation since September. Its route follows the ordinary road network.

In Veneto, works are located in the Belluno area, where Terna has built a connection between the new Arabba Primary Cabin, owned by the local distributor, and the national electricity grid. The area has a 24 km underground cable operational, between Cortina and Auronzo di Cadore.
