PPL Electric Utilities Begins Reliability Project in Downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Feb. 13, 2014
PPL Electric Utilities next week will begin a project to replace old power lines and related electrical equipment in Lancaster’s Old Town neighborhood to improve service reliability.

PPL Electric Utilities next week will begin a project to replace old power lines and related electrical equipment in Lancaster’s Old Town neighborhood to improve service reliability.

Over the next month, weather permitting, the company will replace about 720 ft of underground and 480 ft of overhead power lines and six transformers to improve reliability for about 65 customers on Church, S. Duke and Vine streets.

Preliminary work will begin Monday (1/27), and the project is expected to be completed by the week of Feb. 24. Motorists may encounter occasional lane closures during this period, and some sidewalks may also temporarily close. Working with the city’s Public Works Department, PPL Electric Utilities has arranged for traffic control.

Over the course of the project, power may be interrupted at times so crews can safely perform the work. Affected business and residential customers will be notified by letter about the date, time and duration of outages. Work will be suspended in the event of extreme cold weather.

“Our customers rely on us for dependable service,” said John M. Levitski, PPL Electric Utilities’ regional affairs director for Lancaster. “Projects such as this, combined with our year-round maintenance programs, are aimed squarely at improving operations and service reliability for our customers.”

The Old Town project is part of ongoing network investments by PPL Electric Utilities throughout its 29-county service area. The company plans to spend nearly $1 billion per year over the next five years to strengthen its transmission and distribution systems and replace aging equipment.
