Energex has commenced a $2.5 million upgrade of the 11-kV underground power network in parts of Burleigh Heads, Queensland, Australia. More than 1,200 local homes and businesses are set to benefit from the upgrades that include the installation of 3.5-km of new underground cables and associated reliability works.
According to Energex’s Asset Manager for the South Coast Gary Madigan the upgrades are part of the company’s program to prepare the Gold Coast’s electricity network for future forecast growth in power consumption and to improve supply reliability. “The Gold Coast has always been an area we’ve monitored closely because, despite a slow down in construction nationwide, this part of South East Queensland still presses ahead,” Madigan said. “We are still seeing northern areas of the Gold Coast expanding rapidly and the region still leads the way in home air-conditioner and other power-intensive lifestyle appliance uptake which places further load on existing networks around the city including the Burleigh area. This new work will help us meet the future needs of Burleigh and ensure locals have a robust and reliable power supply,” he said.
Work on the project is expected to be complete in July this year weather and local conditions permitting. During construction partial lane closures will be required for the safety of motorists, pedestrians and Energex crews. Any changed road conditions will be managed by traffic control staff.
The project is part of a five-year capital works program being undertaken by ENERGEX - South East Queensland’s electricity distributor - to upgrade its electricity network.
