The Importance of Weather Readiness for Utilities

In recent years, increasingly volatile weather has significantly impacted utility operations and their bottom line. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, thunderstorms, hurricanes, and blizzards have accounted for 58% of all outages since 2002, with aging infrastructure exacerbating the problem. Being weather ready means getting out of reaction mode when it comes to severe weather. A utility that is weather ready has a clear understanding of how its operations and financials are impacted by weather volatility; it can measure how weather impacts its overall business goals; and it has the knowledge and ability for maintaining service levels and limiting operational costs during a severe weather event.
