The value of the electric grid has never been greater, but the challenges to the value of that grid have never been stronger. In the near future, new technologies, distributed energy resources (DER) and the “grid of things” will demand an even more robust, reliable and resilient electric grid. The opportunity for regulated utilities to invest in the electric grid to deliver the future will be challenged by free market alternatives unrestricted by regulatory mandates or rate structures.
