Unit Finds Cable Sheath Faults Fast

Aug. 19, 2014
The instrument uses the voltage drop method of fault pre-location, which provides results that are unaffected by the resistance of supplementary connections and test leads.

Readily portable and featuring intuitive menu-driven operation, the SebaKMT MFM 10 sheath-fault location system from Megger provides a fast, convenient and accurate solution for testing cable sheaths, as well as for pre-locating and pinpointing sheath faults.

The instrument uses the voltage drop method of fault pre-location, which provides results that are unaffected by the resistance of supplementary connections and test leads, as well as featuring bipolar operation, which eliminates the risk of errors resulting from thermoelectric and galvanic effects in the cable under test.

With its integral 10 kV voltage source, the MFM 10 is ideally suited for carrying out tests on medium- and high-voltage cables, and the 750 mA current capability of this source is invaluable for testing of long cable lengths and for “burning” faults that are difficult to locate using other methods. The instrument also offers a multi-section facility that allows the entry of data for multiple cable segments with different parameters.

Test data is entered using the easy-to-use SebaKMT “easyGO” system. This features a single turn-and-push knob to select all major functions, complemented by a backlit touch screen that also provides a graphical display of test voltage and current. Testing is rapid and fully automated, with all results stored for subsequent inspection or for downloading and analysis with the Easyprot software package supplied with the instrument.

To ensure operator safety and to protect the instrument, the MFM 10 automatically checks that connections to the cable under test have been made correctly before it allows testing to be initiated. An integrated discharge function is also provided to help ensure that the cable is safely discharged when testing at the completion of testing.

The SebaKMT MFM 10 cable sheath fault location system from Megger can be powered from mains supplies in the range 88 to 264 V, 50 or 60 Hz, or can alternatively operate from its internal rechargeable NiMH battery. It weighs just 25 kg and the standard version is fitted in a robust PELI case with an IP53 ingress protection rating. The MFM 10 can also be supplied as a 19-inch rack-mounting version for installation in cable test vehicles.
