BPL Global, Ltd. has announced its next-generation Connected Energy Substation Automation solution designed to enable substations as an intelligent hub within the broader smart grid. BPLG's solution delivers improved grid reliability and asset management as well as reduced maintenance costs through the integration of data from discrete substation systems and visualization for management and control of substation assets.

Substations are evolving to contain more intelligent electronic devices (IED's) performing operational, protection and monitoring functions. BPLG's Substation Automation consolidates the significant amount of data from these IED's and provides grid operators a real-time view of substation status and operation as well as facilitating better management and control over substation assets. The challenges created by the growing number of IEDs include multi-vendor compatibility issues and disparate communications protocols. BPLG's system meets these challenges through a modular, distributed processing architecture integrating multi-vendor devices combined with one of the broadest IED communications protocol libraries in the industry.

BPLG's Substation Automation solution provides an integrated communications environment, collecting data from various substation IEDs in real time, processing the data and offering visualization, management and control of substation assets through the system's Human-Machine Interface (HMI). The substation data and visualization can be leveraged throughout the utility organization including grid operations, engineering, maintenance, planning and billing, improving the ROI of the automation investment. Further benefits include expanded access to a broader range of operational information that can speed management decision-making as well as preventive or remedial action needed to minimize outages and extend asset life.
