Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) has announced the offering of dedicated phasor measurement units for utilities that require a separate PMU. These products provide real-time measurement of electrical quantities from across a power system, which can be used for wide-area control, measurement, and analysis. Applications include validation of system models, measurement of stability margins, maximizing stable system loading, islanding detection, and system-wide disturbance monitoring.

The two newest additions to SEL’s PMU offerings are the SEL-487E and the SEL-351A-1. The SEL-487E offers 24 channels of IEEE C37.118 synchrophasor messaging capabilities (six three-phase current inputs and two three-phase voltage inputs). The SEL-487E is well equipped with phasor measurements on all inputs and includes direct PMU-to-PMU capabilities. The SEL-351A-1 dedicated PMU has three-phase voltage and current inputs.
