Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) accepted the Best Paper Award for a technical paper presented at the 2012 Georgia Tech Fault Disturbance and Analysis Conference.

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) today accepted the Best Paper Award for a technical paper presented at the 2011 Georgia Tech Fault Disturbance and Analysis Conference.

The award-winning paper, entitled “Real-Time Multiterminal Fault Location System for Transmission Networks,” was authored by SEL employees Yanfeng Gong, R&D lead research engineer; Armando Guzmán, R&D manager; Gabriel Benmouyal, R&D principal research engineer; and Mangapathirao Mynam, R&D lead research engineer, as well as Boris Shulim, senior system relay protection engineer for Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc.

The paper compares fault location results calculated from field event records against records obtained from models of real power systems with actual fault locations. It then presents a fully automated, real-time fault location system that provides accurate fault location information for multiple transmission lines.

“It is an honor for us to receive this award from a well-recognized institute in power systems engineering,” said Guzmán. “Each time SEL publishes a paper, we expend a significant amount of resources on research, writing, and numerous reviews.” Mynam added, “This is one of the reasons why SEL papers are well recognized in the industry.”

SEL authors accepted the award during a ceremony at the 2012 Georgia Tech Fault Disturbance and Analysis Conference, held at the George Tech Global Learning Center in Atlanta, Georgia. SEL has actively participated in the Georgia Tech Fault Disturbance and Analysis Conference since the conference’s inception in 1997, including presenting technical papers and hosting a solutions lab where SEL experts provide hands-on demonstrations of new products and solutions.
