S&C Electric Co. recently shipped a PureWave DSTATCOM Distributed Static Compensator to the UK for installation at Renewable Energy Systems’ Dun Law Extension Wind Farm, located near Edinburgh, Scotland. The ±5 MVAR inverter-based system is in the process of being placed into service. The Dun Law Extension Wind Farm features 35 turbines with an output of 30 MW, complementing the 17 MW produced at the original Dun Law Wind Farm.

The PureWave DSTATCOM includes step-up transformers and switchgear as well as switched capacitor and reactor banks. The system meets UK compliance testing requirements—a prerequisite for wind farms to meet the rigorous Grid Code interconnection standards. These standards include complex interconnection specifications which call for continuous voltage regulation or reactive power control with very rapid response.
