Quick Fault Localization in Power Transformers

Sept. 4, 2012
With OMICRON’s new PDL 650, faults in the oil-paper insulation of power transformers can be located by acoustic PD measurements.

To locate insulation weak spots effectively, it is imperative that their location be identified quickly. Partial discharge (PD) may occur, and can therefore be measured, before the defect leads to complete failure of the insulation system.

With OMICRON’s new PDL 650, faults in the oil-paper insulation of power transformers can be located by acoustic PD measurements. The PDL 650 localizes the PD signals using multiple sensors distributed around the surface of the power transformer.

Based on the time difference between the incoming signals, the fault location can be detected. Finally, its coordinates are shown in a 3D model of the transformer.

Thus insulation defects in power transformers can be located quickly and precisely helping to plan repairs or corrective actions more effectively.
