Open Systems International, Inc. and partner Global Energy Technologies Ltd. have been awarded a new contract by the Federal Electricity & Water Authority of the United Arab Emirates to upgrade its existing control center with a state-of-the-art new SCADA, Energy Management System, and Distribution Management System as part of a wider ranging turnkey project, including the commission and building of a new and modern Load Dispatch Center in Um Al-Quain.

As a national-level utility organization, the Federal Electricity & Water Authority is an essential pillar in the UAE’s ongoing growth and development efforts. Charged with overseeing the nation’s federal utilities, FEWA also directly services four of the UAE’s seven emirates, providing critical electricity and water services to more than 230,000 customers. This new Load Dispatch Center Project is part of FEWA’s mission to further secure its status among the region’s most progressive utilities.

In support of FEWA’s modernization and expansion initiatives, OSI is providing a unified new control system based on OSI’s monarch (Multi-platform Open Network ARCHitecture) technology; set to offer a consolidated management of UAE’s transmission assets, as well as a portion of the UAE distribution infrastructure. This new system is set to streamline and upgrade FEWA’s existing control center operations through the unified deployment of real-time supervisory control, high-voltage network analysis and distribution and outage management applications.

This evolutionary new project for FEWA will be implemented in cooperation with OSI’s UAE Alliance Partner, Global Energy Technologies; and will encompass a wide array of specialized OSI products from the SCADA, EMS and DMS software suites. FEWA’s new system will be using OSI’s next-generation Microsoft .NET-based Graphical User Interface (GUI) as a unified interface for all operational applications. In addition to SCADA and real-time applications, a full suite of Transmission Management Applications including State Estimation, Contingency Analysis and Optimal Power Flow are included. For Distribution Management, the system will support Distribution Power Flow; Fault Isolation and System Restoration; Load Balancing; Automatic Feeder Reconfiguration; Outage Management and Analysis. This system will be replacing a legacy platform supplied by ABB.
