Telvent is working with Progress Energy Carolinas to develop and implement an electric distribution system substation communications platform. The new platform will support the goals of the energy provider’s comprehensive Distribution System Demand Response (DSDR) project.

DSDR is a component of Progress Energy's Smart Grid strategy that will help the company to deliver power more efficiently through equipment and technology enhancements to the utility's existing electrical system. The real-time information available through this system will allow network operators to efficiently reduce load during periods of peak demand and maintain consistent voltage to all customers, avoiding outages without increasing peak generation capacity.

To meet DSDR objectives and provide operators with real-time power quality parameters such as volts, amps, watts, vars, VA, frequency and power factor from grid substations, Telvent has enhanced the SAGE 3030 RTU gateway, a Smart Networks Solution component of the Telvent Smart Grid Solution suite. The enhanced Telvent substation gateway will accommodate the increasing quantities of data required to support the DSDR system and will be key in helping Progress Energy achieve a state-of-the-art electric delivery system that supports its strategy for a secure energy future.

Telvent started delivering this substation gateway platform to Progress Energy beginning in 2009. Further, Telvent will work with Progress Energy to develop a new substation analog input module that interfaces with the SAGE 3030 RTU to achieve optimized functionality. Progress Energy plans to deploy up to 1,600 of these upgraded modules and appropriately modified SAGE 3030 units from 2010 through 2012.

Earlier this year, Telvent was chosen to supply a new, fully redundant Distribution SCADA/DMS - also part of its Smart Grid Solution suite - to support the real-time information management goals of the DSDR project.
