OSI Supplies Volt/VAR Control Systems to North Carolina Electric Memberships

The three Electric Membership Cooperatives participating in this contract serve more than 108,000 customers in 11 of the counties in North Carolina.

Open Systems International Inc. has been selected by three members of the North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation to implement a new state-of-the-art Volt/VAR control system for each member including: Union Power Cooperative, Randolph EMC and Cape Hatteras EMC.

The three Electric Membership Cooperatives participating in this contract serve more than 108,000 customers in 11 of the counties in North Carolina. Each of these cooperatives is a member-owned, not-for-profit organization, overseen by a board of directors elected by the membership.

These new VVC systems are based on the OSI Spectra Advanced Distribution Management System platform and fully integrate with their existing OSI monarch SCADA systems. The VVC implementation supports traditional Volt/VAR Control as well as Conservation Voltage Reduction. The solution interfaces various systems including the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) using the MultiSpeak® standard.

Union Power Cooperative is an electric distribution cooperative, headquartered in Monroe, NC. Union Power serves more than 70,000 member accounts in Union, Stanly, Cabarrus, Mecklenburg and Rowan counties and has more than 100 employees. Union Power is a not-for-profit organization, incorporated in 1939. Union Power has approximately 5,700 miles of energized distribution and transmission lines, 23 substations and 3 breaker stations and purchases wholesale power from the North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation. (NCEMC).

Randolph Electric Membership Corporation currently serves more than 31,000 consumer-members in the North Carolina counties of Randolph, Moore, Montgomery, Chatham and Alamance. This service area covers more than 4,100 miles of lines through rolling hills, river valleys and forestland located approximately at the geographic center of the state.

Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative is a member owned non-profit electric distribution cooperative that has served customers on Hatteras Island for over 60 years. Today, the cooperative serves over 7,000 accounts.
