Guam Power Authority has selected the Gridstream RF advanced metering solution for its project to implement smart grid technology.

GPA plans to deploy more than 52,000 advanced meters and Gridstream network components over the next two years. The utility will deploy E-350 FOCUS AX-SD meters with integrated service switch and ZigBee capabilities to the majority of its residential customers. The Gridstream RF network will provide a backbone for possible communication with other grid devices and home area network applications in the future.

In addition to operational and engineering benefits, GPA is exploring consumer services, such as pre-pay, that use the advanced metering network. The ability of Gridstream to remotely operate and monitor other meters and network devices could also add value for the utility.

GPA is both a generation and distribution utility serving over 49,000 customers on the Island of Guam. The utility has 550 megawatts of generation capacity, maintains 663 miles of transmission and distribution lines and operates 29 substations. The utility employs 547 people with an elected five-member Commission on Consolidated Utilities and is regulated by the Guam Public Utilities Commission.
