PECO will build an advanced IP-based optical communications network as part of its initiative to upgrade metering technology for customers.

As part of the initiative, Alcatel-Lucent is providing and implementing end-to-end IP connectivity via an optical core as well as wireless (WiMAX) and microwave edge connections. The new network will help PECO give customers the information they need to use and save energy effectively.

“By deploying a network that combines optical, IP and microwave technology, PECO will have the ability to transmit mission critical data and applications to and from its control centers automatically, so customers can rapidly and efficiently control individual energy usage,” said Eric Thomas, vice president of Sales for Strategic Industries in Alcatel-Lucent’s North America Region.

The Alcatel-Lucent solution includes:

  • A single converged IP/MPLS network allowing PECO to offer new IP services with enhanced quality of service and end-to-end common operations and service management. The IP/MPLS solution also has the capability to deliver seamless services across fiber and microwave technologies.
  • A Gigabit Ethernet switch specifically built for IP network deployments in unusually demanding operational environments;
  • Microwave packet radio and long-haul microwavesolutions, managed by the Service Aware Manager, for a single service-aware solution that enables PECO to optimize service delivery in any condition, as air bandwidth is fully exploited for maximum utilization of the radio band and service reliability.
  • A complete portfolio of professional and network integration services including comprehensive IP traffic engineering and design, circuit provisioning, maintenance services and project management.

PECO serves more than 1.6 million residential and commercial customers in southeastern Pennsylvania, and is in the process of upgrading its metering technology during the next 10 years.
