Energex has flicked the switch on a $13 million upgrade to the local electricity network of South East Queensland, Australia, which will enhance the power supplies for more than 13,000 northern Sunshine Coast homes and businesses.

The project involved upgrading the Noosaville substation in Nannygai Street with a new transformer, switchboard and capacitor bank, as well as enhancements to the local electricity network.

The improvements provide additional capacity and enhance reliability for homes and businesses in Noosaville, Tewantin, Sunrise Beach, Sunshine Beach, Noosa Junction and Noosa Heads, including the Hastings Street tourism precinct.

The completion of the Noosaville project closely follows the recent completion of a new $17 million new substation at Pinbarren which will benefit more than 2000 homes and businesses in the local area.

The upgrades are part of Energex’s commitment to provide a safe, secure and highly reliable, cost effective electricity supply to its customers. Importantly, now complete, they provide more operational flexibility to our high voltage network on the northern end of the Coast and will allow Energex to meet the short and long-term electricity needs of the homes and businesses in the area.

Energex thanked the local community for their patience and input during the planning and construction process.

The capital works program aims to improve and reinforce electricity supplies across South East Queensland, especially to meet peak electricity demand periods, and to support the increased use of residential solar power and lifestyle-enhancing appliances, such as air-conditioners and flat screen televisions.

In a related announcement, Energex has finished a $10 million-plus upgrade to the Hamilton and Ascot electricity network which will benefit more than 6,000 homes and businesses in the local area.

The project involved major upgrades of Energex’s Hamilton Substation. The upgrade included the replacement of two 7.5 MVA electricity transformers with two 25 MVA transformers, more than tripling the power capacity to homes and businesses in parts of Ascot, Hamilton, Eagle Farm, Hendra, Newstead and Albion.

The project also included the installation of a new underground power cable and replacing 3.4 km of overhead power lines in the local streets in Hamilton and Ascot.

The upgrades will provide the improved reliability and increased power capacity allowing for future growth and increased local electricity use.
