ABB has won two orders with a joint value of $14 million from the Swedish national grid company, Svenska Kraftnät, to upgrade the 400-kV switchgear at its Forsmark nuclear plant. The substation is highly prioritized in the company’s plan to refurbish the Swedish grid. This is due to the advanced age of the substation and its importance to the grid in relation to the connection of the nuclear power plant.

The project is divided into two contracts with a new 400-kV double-breaker switchgear, and building control systems that will be built next to the old substation. The switchgear comprises three feeder bays, four transformer bays and two bus bars with sectionalizers. Svenska Kraftnät also continues to improve its grid reliability and availability with ABB’s disconnecting circuit breaker. This is the fourth consecutive project awarded to ABB in the last 18 months in Svenska Kraftnät’s refurbishment plan.

“Our technical expertise and long experience of similar projects together with leading power products are key factors in winning this contract,” says Max Elvelo, account manager at ABB Sweden.
