Is It the End of Traditional Regional Power Plants?

A few weeks ago, the Nuclear Energy Institute reported that 15 to 20 additional nuclear plants may be forced to retire early due to market conditions. The fossil fuel-fired generation industry, which has lost literally hundreds of plants over the last few years, is shedding no tears for the nukes. Yet, we have seen a boom in wind and solar generation, and now analysts believe that the combined heat and power (CHP) and fuel cell markets in the United States will grow by 11 GW over the next 10 years.
