ATC Plans to Rebuild Aging Transmission Line

May 22, 2014
The proposed Colley Road-Brick Church Rebuild Project will run from the Colley Road Substation in Beloit, Wisconsin, to the Brick Church Substation in Walworth, Wisconsin.

American Transmission Co. has filed an application with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin to rebuild a 20-mi, 69-KV transmission line in Rock and Walworth counties. The proposed Colley Road-Brick Church Rebuild Project will run from the Colley Road Substation in Beloit, Wisconsin, to the Brick Church Substation in Walworth, Wisconsin. The project also involves construction of the new Tiger Substation near Clinton, Wisconsin.

The project will involve stringing new wires and replacing aging wood transmission poles with new steel poles. The current route will generally be maintained, though minor adjustments are planned to improve design efficiency.  Spans will be increased where possible to minimize the total number of structures. The new substation will be constructed on approximately 10 acres of land owned by ATC near Clinton.

“The project is needed to replace aging infrastructure, as much of the existing line is more than 60 years old,” said Jon Callaway, senior local relations representative for ATC. “It also will help ensure electric reliability in the area by relieving potential system constraints due to projected load growth.”

If the estimated $40 million project is approved, construction would begin in mid to late 2015 to meet an in-service date of 2018.

Additional details are available on the PSC website under Docket No. 137-CE-171. A map of the proposed project and additional information can be found at www.atc-projects.com.
