Oncor (Dallas, Texas, U.S), formerly TXU and Texas Utilities, recently installed CDR Systems Corp.'s (Ormond Beach, Florida, U.S.) new 8- by 8- by 5-ft (2.4- by 2.4 by 1.5-m) composite vault for underground switchgear.

Oncor chose the CDR vault for its lightweight (one-tenth the weight of concrete) and torsion-assist polymer concrete lids. The completed installation improves the visual appeal of the area by placing the switchgear below the ground level.

The CDR vaults included a platform for the switchgear, working platform, ladder, pulling eyes and conduit terminators. The torsion-assist lids allow one-hand opening with little effort and do not heat up like steel or aluminum covers. This easy opening feature is especially important during outage situations.
