OMICRON will present an informative technical tutorial  – “Testing the Protection System, Not the Element” – on its Roadshow Bus in Booth #2739 during the IEEE PES T&D Conference & Exposition in Chicago. Two 20-minute sessions led by Will Knapek are scheduled for Tuesday, April 15 – 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday, April 16 – 11:30 a.m.

Summary description

Explore the shift in traditional relay testing to a more complete system test.  Test the logic of the relay, not the capability of the microprocessor to perform math.

As the technology for protecting the power systems as evolved, the process of testing the protection must also evolve.  The protection devices that are in service are moving away from electromechanical devices to intelligent electronic devices the methods of testing need to be updated.  No longer is it applicable to test the capability of the modern relay to perform the mathematics of calculating the proper timing of an overcurrent element or the proper impedance characteristic in a distance element.  Join in a discussion on modern testing technics that focus on the system, not the element.  Explore the testing practice of system testing and learn how to apply them.

Instructor bio

William Knapek received a BS degree in Industrial Technology from East Carolina University in 1994.  He retired from the US Army as a Chief Warrant Officer after 20 years of service in 1995.  During his time with the Army Corps of Engineers, he held positions as a power plant instrumentation specialist, a writer/instructor for the Army Engineer School, and a Facility Engineer for a Special Operations compound. He has been active in the electrical testing industry since retiring in 1995.  He worked for NETA companies in the Nashville, TN area until joining OMICRON as an application engineer in April of 2008.

He is currently the Secondary Engineering Service and Customer Support Manager for OMICRON. He is certified as a Senior NICET Technician and a former NETA Level IV technician. Will is a member of IEEE.
