Open Systems International, Inc. has been awarded a contract by Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative, Inc. (SMECO) to implement a SCADA/DMS system, integrated with other SMECO systems as integral additions to its smart grid enterprise systems.
SMECO is one of the ten largest customer-owned electric cooperatives in the nation and has been ranked as top among mid-sized utilities in the J.D. Powers survey of customer satisfaction with electric utilities for the past six years. The new SCADA/DMS will add advanced capabilities that will provide SMECO with both the visualization of the current network operating conditions and optimal solutions to further improve reliability and efficiency.
Ken Capps, vice president of Engineering and Operations, said, "As a cooperative, everything we do is for our customer-members. We need the ability to integrate SCADA with advanced switching equipment and metering technology and we want to be able to use analytical and decision-making tools that will help us maintain an efficient, reliable electric system."
OSI's Spectra DMS provides SMECO with integrated capabilities built on OSI's monarch Smart Grid Platform. The advanced functionality presented by OSI's solution includes the next-generation, .NET based Graphical User Interface (GUI); Advanced SCADA; Alarm Management; Trending; Historical Information System; and Operator Training Simulator, as well as Distribution Network Operating Map; Distribution Power Flow; Volt/VAR Control; Fault Location, Isolation and Service Restoration; Feeder Reconfiguration; Fault Protection Analysis; Short Term Load Forecast; and Switching Order Management.
